Our old side is taken down, and we are now working on getting a new and better website up and running, where we will offer membership to the religion, religious education and a lot more.
The gods were part of an old religion that was worshiped by the Germanic people and later the Vikings.
When Christianity took over in the Nordic countries around the year 1000, people were forbidden to worship the old gods.
In secret, some still worshiped the old gods and called it Forn Sidr (The Old Way).
Christianity was the new way and tried to remove the old way by building churches on top of the holy places of the gods and using rune stones as building material for churches.
The old way is dead; we can't get it back, as all the written materials come from other religions, mainly Christianity. We have few items from which we can gather some information as well.
That has not stopped people from trying in modern times to restore the religion.
Asatro started in the 19th century.
Asatro not only involves the worship of the Asa but also the Jotnar, or the Etunaz as their original name is, and the Vanirs. So the name for the religion, Asatro, is a modern name for it.
People started going out into nature, like fields, forests, or near lakes, where they felt close to the gods and energies they believe in. They formed small local communities where they discussed what they know and believe about the old religion.
In 2003, a religion called Forn Sidr became a recognized religious community in Denmark, and even more small communities started. Slowly, the idea of the gods spread.
We find people who believe in the gods all over the world, but we think most are in Scandinavia.
The popular idea within the faith is that what you believe is the truth. This tends to divide people more than unite us, as we all have different ideas and ways of doing things, which is okay for those who like it so.
In 2019, Norraentru started in Denmark, a new translation of the materials we have of the old way.
The idea is to make a religion where we teach the same thing to all, so instead of many having their own religion, we create a religion for all.
We work hard to filter out the influences of other religions from the texts we have, collect the pieces, and then use Volve to fill in the gaps, if they can.
